The PaʻaKai We Bring
Pīpī holo kaʻao. Sprinkled, the tale travels far.
Hawaiian Proverb
Created by Moses Goods and the HTY Ensemble
The Show
This original production introduces young audiences to the Native Hawaiian relationship to pa‘akai (salt). Traditionally, pa‘akai is food, medicine, a sacrament and a treasured gift. The play follows multiple generations of salt farmers on Kauai, mixing in ancient stories, hula, live music, original songs and plenty of audiences participation into a tasty potluck of performance, joyously served up with aloha.
The Tour
We are currently bringing this show on an international tour across the United States and Canada! Mahalo to everyone who is so generously hosting our team on the road. If you would like more information on this tour or to look into booking the show for our 2025 tour please contact Holden Arts and Associates.
The Team
Led by HTY Artistic Associate, Moses Goods the HTY creative team traveled to Kauai and spent time working and learning from traditional salt harvesters before creating this project.
We are an ensemble of local theatrical artists and educators who create original work for and about our community. This project was lead by Native Hawaiians and seeks to honor the culture, language and traditions of this place.

We have a lot of resources and materials connected to this show and will be adding more and more as the run continues. Thank you for your patience as we put these together and get them ready for you.

Mahalo
HTY would like to extend a special mahalo to the Nizo, Santos and Nobrega families and all the other salt-makers of Hanapēpē. Without their ʻike and aloha this project wouldn’t have been possible.
