Director’s Notes

We are delighted to bring you another original production, this time a new adaptation of one of the most important Asian American novels for young people, widely taught across the country and in Hawaii.  At first glance the story, set in 1940s Brooklyn may seem distant in time and location but we think it is the perfect time for us to tell this story on our stage. This year we celebrate Jackie Robinson’s 100th birthday and the year of the Boar in the Chinese zodiac, so the timing could never be better.  Learning that both the author and Mr. Robinson lived in Hawaii early in their careers confirmed that this too was a piece of our history as well. We are extremely grateful to Mrs. Lord for granting us the rights to adapt this work for the stage version you will see here today and to playwright, Mark Branner, and the entire team of theatrical artists who have worked so passionately to bring the story to life.

Introduction

Adapted from an award-winning novel, this play is the touching story of a young Chinese American girl and her family moving from China to the United States in 1947. Told through humor, language, and a rich multi-media staging, the play celebrates the bravery and sacrifice of those who bring new perspectives to our country.
