After School and Weekend Drama Programs

Honolulu Theatre for Youth has an international reputation for providing quality drama education to young people of all ages, experience, and ability. Each year, thousands of young people participate in one or more of the following programs, each of which encourages creativity, imagination, and an appreciation for theatre arts.

HTY's drama education classes and workshops are offered in support of the Department of Education’s HCPS III. They provide students with the opportunity to exercise their imaginations, become responsible for their own learning, learn to work well with others, be risk-takers and problem-solvers, produce quality work and experiment with acting, writing and design skills within the context of a nurturing environment.

We believe that every child, not just the dramatically talented, should be given the opportunity to learn and grow through the drama experience. HTY’s Drama Education programs range from classroom residencies to serious theatre training.

Below is a listing of all educational programs offered by HTY. Scroll down until you reach the program that interests you.

“It was important to me that the standards could be addressed using an engaging approach.  We could also use drama to reach students in a learning style that suits them.” – 8th grade teacher, Nanakuli Middle School

“It helps me learn by understanding new words and standards like nonfiction writing; especially persuasive.” – 7th grade student, Nanakuli Middle School

Drama Inspires Learning

For more than twenty years, Honolulu Theatre for Youth drama specialists have worked with teachers to help extend student achievement in a range of subjects, from language arts to social studies to science, even math, in ways that significantly involve and engage every student. Tens of thousands of students have benefited from HTY workshops, getting excited about exploring ideas, debating key questions and learning.

Drama Addresses Content Standards

HTY drama residencies connect directly to a wide range of the HCPS III benchmarks, deepening student comprehension and understanding.  Students gain a richer vocabulary, a fuller understanding of the reading process and can directly connect their new learning to the benchmarks. With all residencies, teachers will receive lesson plan packages that outline the connection between the lesson and the benchmarks covered.
